Getting married in Madrid

Madrid is the Spanish wedding for couples who want a city their guests can genuinely reach and a party that runs until breakfast. The centre offers palacios, historic hotels and courtyard buildings that seat a formal dinner without any decorating at all, and the districts around Retiro and Salamanca keep everyone within a short taxi ride of each other. Twenty to seventy minutes out, the region opens into fincas, walled estates and country houses, with the sierra north-west towards Guadarrama and San Lorenzo de El Escorial putting mountains behind the ceremony at well below coastal prices.

It suits couples whose guests fly in from several countries, because Barajas is direct to most of Europe and the high-speed network puts Seville, Valencia and Barcelona within a few hours for anyone extending the trip. Plan around the local rhythm: dinner at half past nine and dancing past three are ordinary here. The constraint is summer.

July and August afternoons commonly pass thirty-five degrees, and the city empties in August, so the suppliers and restaurants you wanted may simply be shut.

The three that catch people out

Know before you book

  1. 1

July and August afternoons commonly pass thirty-five degrees and much of the city shuts for August. If you marry in high summer, put the ceremony in the evening, plan shade and water, and confirm your suppliers are working that month.

  2. 2

Fincas outside the city usually impose their own catering and bar, and hold a music licence with an end time set by the municipality. Ask for the exclusivity terms and the licensed hours in writing before comparing quotes.

  3. 3

Central venues sit in residential buildings and dense streets, which limits load-in windows, late music and coach access. Check the delivery times and where suppliers may park before you fix the schedule.

Getting there

Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas is one of the better-connected airports in Europe and sits twenty to thirty minutes from the centre by metro, Cercanias train or taxi. High-speed trains from Atocha and Chamartin reach Seville, Malaga, Valencia and Barcelona in two to three hours, and Segovia and Toledo in well under an hour if you want to give guests a second day out. Inside the city nobody needs a car. For a finca in the sierra, budget forty to seventy-five minutes each way and run return shuttles, because evening taxis do not come to a rural gate. Publish the shuttle departure times, not just the venue address.

Before you promise anyone anything

Couples from abroad often marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony at the finca or hotel. Where a local civil or religious marriage is possible, the requirements, documents, translations, residence conditions and any waiting period vary by nationality, by municipality and over time, and practice differs between town halls in the same region. Nothing here is legal advice: confirm the current rules with the ayuntamiento where you intend to marry and with your own authorities, and get the answer in writing, before you plan a date around it.

Marriage rules vary by country, region and even municipality, and they change. Treat this as orientation, not legal advice: verify the paperwork with the local authority and with your own municipality before you book anything.

Researched venues

23 wedding venues in Madrid

Gathered offline through research from each venue’s own website, never a live feed, and never paid for. A venue is listed because it exists and takes weddings, not because Vow endorses it; the one line under each is what a planner would tell you to check before asking for a quote. Venue details are shown as the venue publishes them.

  • palacio

    Palacio del Negralejo

    Capacity
    not published
    Price
not published — ask for the brochure

An 18th-century country residence east of the city with a central patio, rose garden and pergola, plus a chapel on site for a religious ceremony. Catering is the venue's own, so bringing an outside caterer is unlikely to be possible; ask how many weddings share the grounds on the same day, as the group also runs the neighbouring Jardines Negralejo.

  • castle

    Castillo de Viñuelas

    Capacity
from 90 to 1,900 guests; Salón Colonial up to 500, Pabellón de Caza up to 200
    Price
not published — the venue states it works with personalised quotes, not fixed rates

A fortress-palace inside the protected Soto de Viñuelas estate, roughly twenty minutes north of the centre, with three separate buildings that suit very different guest counts. Because the site sits in a protected natural area, check access, coach parking and any restrictions on music or lighting outdoors.

  • palace

    Palacio de Aldovea

    Capacity
capacity for more than five hundred guests, as published by the venue
    Price
not published — ask for the brochure

An 18th-century listed palace at Torrejón de Ardoz with a Castilian courtyard and two gardens, run with a single event a day. The house catering team also manages the venue, so the menu and the hire come as one package; confirm what is included before comparing quotes with venues that hire out bare.

  • finca

    Finca El Gasco

    Capacity
    not published
    Price
not published — ask for the brochure

A century-old manor house on high ground in a natural park at Torrelodones, with meadows, an orchard, a pond and 19th-century ruins for the ceremony. The finca works with a short list of approved caterers rather than one in-house kitchen, so ask for all three quotes before choosing.

  • castle

    Castillo de Batres

    Capacity
    40–350 diners
    Price
not published — ask for the brochure

A 15th-century listed castle about thirty kilometres south-west of the city, hired exclusively so no other celebration shares the day. Renaissance gardens, terraces and the central courtyard all work for an outdoor ceremony; check the wet-weather plan, as the indoor rooms are smaller than the grounds suggest. The castle has no site of its own; it is presented and sold by the caterer-operator Grupo Life Gourmet, so the quote comes from them.

  • palace

    Palacio de Silvela

    Capacity
    not published
    Price
not published — ask for the brochure

An 1860 palace in the former royal medicinal garden at Aranjuez, facing the Royal Palace, with just over 600 square metres of gardens for the ceremony and drinks. Aranjuez is about 45 minutes from central Madrid, so plan guest transport and ask what accommodation the operator can block nearby. The palace has no separate site; it is presented and sold by the operator Eventos eQuo.

  • palace

    Palacio de la Margarita

    Capacity
    not published
    Price
not published — ask for the brochure

A late 19th-century mansion in the sierra at Collado Villalba, set in a large private estate about 40 minutes from the centre. Everything from linen to menu is quoted per couple rather than packaged, so ask for a written breakdown early and confirm which in-house catering brand is running your date.

  • finca

    Finca Castillo Monteviejo

    Capacity
    not published
    Price
not published — ask for the brochure

A castle-styled finca off the A-1 at El Molar, north of the city, with a flower hall, a willow-shaded marquee and a bridal room on site. The tent carries much of the seated plan, so ask what it looks like in winter and whether it is heated.

  • finca

    Finca La Montaña

    Capacity
banquets of up to 300 guests
    Price
not published — ask for the brochure

A hillside estate above the Aranjuez plain built around a small 1760 palace, split into two independently accessed gardens each with its own parking and banqueting hall. Aranjuez is 47 km from Madrid, so budget for coaches; ask which of the two zones your date is held in and whether the other is booked the same day.

  • historic mill estate

    Antigua Fábrica de Harinas

    Capacity
    not published
    Price
not published — ask for the brochure

A restored flour mill on a 14-hectare estate at Torremocha de Jarama, in the countryside north-east of the city, with several stone buildings for ceremony, dinner and party. Nothing is priced publicly and packages are built per couple; ask what is included and where guests can stay, as the village is small.

  • rustic finca

Casa El Palero — Finca Prados Riveros

    Capacity
    not published
    Price
not published — ask for the brochure

A family-run 12-hectare estate in the Sierra de Guadarrama at Rascafría, with mountain views, terraces and rural accommodation on the property. It is the furthest of the sierra options from the city and mountain weather turns quickly, so confirm the indoor fallback and how many beds are actually on site.

  • historic factory

    Real Fábrica de Tapices

    Capacity
Sala Goya 400 for a banquet or 700 for a cocktail; Sala Teniers 240 cocktail; gardens up to 600 cocktail
    Price
not published — ask for the brochure

A working tapestry manufactory of more than three hundred years standing near Atocha, hired for one wedding a day with halls hung with tapestries and a garden for drinks. Catering is tied to the house partner; being a heritage building, ask early what can be rigged, hung or lit.

  • finca

    Finca La Gaivota

    Capacity
La pradera seats banquets of up to 500; la era up to 400 for a cocktail or 350 seated
    Price
not published — ask for the brochure

A 1940s Galician-style manor house with granite walls and a watchtower, set in gardens inside the city boundary at Aravaca, roughly ten minutes from central Madrid. It works with a short list of partner caterers rather than an in-house kitchen; because it sits in a residential area, check the music curfew before planning a late party.

  • manor house

    Finca El Campillo

    Capacity
    not published
    Price
not published — ask for the brochure

A former royal hunting estate at San Lorenzo de El Escorial with a tower, chapel and medieval wall, in open country below the monastery. The in-house team plans the day themselves, which suits couples who do not want a separate planner; ask what happens if the ceremony moves indoors.

  • hotel

    Only YOU Boutique Hotel Madrid

    Capacity
    not published
    Price
not published — ask for the brochure

A design hotel in a 19th-century palace on Barquillo in Chueca, suited to a smaller city wedding where guests sleep in the same building. Spaces are hotel-scale rather than ballroom-scale, so confirm the seated maximum for your date and ask about the reduced room rate for guests.

  • hotel

    Hotel Emperador

    Capacity
up to 250 guests in the hotel's function rooms
    Price
all-inclusive wedding package from EUR 127 + VAT per person, minimum 80 guests; rooftop cocktail and civil ceremony package from EUR 98 + VAT per person

A Gran Vía hotel whose rooftop pool terrace is used for civil ceremonies and drinks, with banqueting rooms downstairs for dinner. It is one of the few Madrid venues publishing per-person package prices; read what the package covers and confirm the rooftop is exclusive to your party.

  • convent estate

El Antiguo Convento de Boadilla del Monte

    Capacity
    not published
    Price
not published — ask for the brochure

A restored 1674 convent about 15 km west of the centre, with both covered and open spaces so the plan survives weather, and a 14-room hotel on site for close family. Catering is the house team's own; ask how the indoor and outdoor rooms are combined for your guest count.

  • finca

    Hacienda Jacaranda

    Capacity
    not published
    Price
not published — ask for the brochure

A rustic-chic estate of more than 9,000 square metres inside the Sierra de Guadarrama national park at Colmenar Viejo, about thirty minutes from the city. Cooking is done in the venue's own kitchen and its planners run the day, so compare the all-in quote against venues that charge hire separately.

  • finca

    Finca Los Olivos

    Capacity
    not published
    Price
not published — ask for the brochure

A country finca at El Vellón in the northern sierra that takes one event a day, with both outdoor and indoor areas for the banquet. Quotes are built to budget rather than published, so ask for a written per-person figure and what the hire itself costs.

  • finca

    La Quinta de Jarama

    Capacity
    not published
    Price
not published — ask for the brochure

An estate of more than 11,000 square metres of grounds at San Sebastián de los Reyes, roughly ten minutes north of the city, with interiors by a well-known Madrid decorator. Close enough that most guests can travel out and back the same evening; confirm the party curfew and taxi access late at night.

  • finca

    Finca Casa de Oficios

    Capacity
    not published
    Price
not published — ask for the brochure

A historic estate in the Jarama valley east of the city, arranged as a series of small courtyards and corners rather than one large room. Nothing is published on size or cost, so ask on the site visit how a full guest list is seated and whether the catering is the venue's own.

  • hotel

    Wellington Hotel & Spa Madrid

    Capacity
Duque de Wellington room up to 300 people at its maximum set-up; Claridge up to 160; Neptuno up to 250 for a cocktail
    Price
not published — ask for the brochure

A classic Salamanca-district hotel beside the Retiro, with two large panelled rooms used for civil ceremonies and banquets and smaller salons for the rehearsal dinner. Suits a city wedding where guests stay in-house; ask what the wedding package covers before comparing it with a bare hire.

  • palace

    Palacio Neptuno

    Capacity
Terraza Neptuno: 120 standing for a cocktail, 70 seated for a banquet
    Price
not published — ask for the brochure

An early 20th-century palace on Plaza de Neptuno, part of the former Medinaceli estate, whose terrace the venue lists for civil ceremonies and drinks. Only one event runs at a time, but the site is aimed mainly at corporate hire, so confirm in writing that a full wedding day is possible on your date.
