Getting married in Catalonia
Catalonia is the version of a Spanish wedding that does not make you choose between a city and the countryside. Barcelona gives you palaces, rooftops and a guest list that can arrive without hiring a car. Forty minutes inland, the Penedes puts you among cava vineyards and masies, the stone farmhouses that make up most of the region's venue stock.
North of Girona the Costa Brava trades vines for pines, cliffs and small coves, while Tarragona and Sitges cover the coast to the south. It suits couples who want their guests to have something to do for three days, and who like the idea of a welcome dinner in a city and a wedding in a field. The region works in Catalan first and Spanish second, which changes nothing practical for you but explains why some supplier websites read oddly in translation.
What surprises couples is how far the northern coast is from Barcelona once you are past Girona, and how firmly a masia package steers you toward its own kitchen. Compare the total per head, not the hire fee.

The three that catch people out
Know before you book
1
Most masies work from a fixed list of caterers, or insist on their own kitchen. Ask for that list and for the all-in price per guest before you compare venues on the hire fee.
2
Noise rules are set town by town and end amplified outdoor music earlier than the party expects. Get the exact cut-off and the indoor fallback written into the contract, not agreed by email.
3
Barcelona, Sitges and the coastal towns fill through July and August, and hotel rates rise with them. If your date falls in high summer, block guest rooms nine to twelve months ahead.
Getting there
Barcelona El Prat is one of the best-connected airports in Europe and reaches Sitges in about half an hour, the Penedes in roughly forty-five minutes and Tarragona in about an hour. Girona serves the northern Costa Brava on mostly low-cost European routes, and Reus covers the south. High-speed trains link Barcelona with Girona, Tarragona, Madrid and the French border, so guests who prefer not to fly have a genuine option. Publish the airport, the nearest station and the drive time from every hotel you recommend, because the three arrival points sit a long way apart.
Before you promise anyone anything
Foreign couples very commonly hold a symbolic ceremony here and complete the legal marriage at home, which keeps the paperwork inside a system and a language they already understand. Where a civil or religious marriage on site is possible at all, the requirements, documents, translations and any residence or waiting period vary by municipality, by nationality and over time. Nothing in this app is legal advice: confirm the current position with the local town hall and with your own authorities, in writing, before you plan anything around it.
Marriage rules vary by country, region and even municipality, and they change. Treat this as orientation, not legal advice: verify the paperwork with the local authority and with your own municipality before you book anything.
Researched venues
24 wedding venues in Catalonia
Gathered offline through research from each venue’s own website, never a live feed, and never paid for. A venue is listed because it exists and takes weddings, not because Vow endorses it; the one line under each is what a planner would tell you to check before asking for a quote. Venue details are shown as the venue publishes them.

Castell d'Empordà
- Capacity
- maximum 200 people for dinner on the terrace; minimum 40 guests
- Price
- not published — ask for the brochure
A restored castle hotel above La Bisbal d'Empordà with 57 rooms, so most of the party can sleep on site and the weekend runs without transfers. The published minimum of 40 guests rules out very small parties; confirm which terrace is held for your date, as the 200-cover dinner space is the same one used for other hotel service.

Finca Mas Solers
- Capacity
- halls with a capacity of up to 1,200 people, as published
- Price
- not published — ask for the brochure
A late 19th-century palace-style estate between Sitges and Barcelona, built at a scale that suits very large receptions and multi-day Indian and Jewish weddings, which the venue names explicitly. - not published — ask for the brochure
A 1950s mansion with large formal gardens in Argentona, roughly half an hour up the coast from Barcelona, which takes one event per day so the grounds are yours. - Price
- not published — ask for the brochure
A five-star seaside classic in S'Agaró on the Costa Brava, with the sea directly below and enough rooms to keep the whole party in one place. - Capacity
- not published
- Price
- not published — ask for the brochure
Barcelona's medieval merchant exchange, whose Gothic Contracting Hall gives a city wedding a genuine sense of occasion without leaving the waterfront. Ten hireable rooms are listed but no capacities or rates, so download the catalogue and pin down which hall you are actually being quoted for.

A castle on the Tarragona coast let for weddings with the Romanesque chapel, main square, sea-facing gardens and a glazed room all on one site. - Price
- not published — ask for the brochure
