Getting married in Bordeaux

Bordeaux is the wine wedding without the Provencal price tag. The city is eighteenth-century, flat and walkable, with quays along the Garonne and enough hotels to house a large guest list within a tram ride of each other. The wedding itself usually happens somewhere else, at one of the many chateaux viticoles spread through the Medoc, the Entre-deux-Mers and the country around Saint-Emilion.

The two ends of the region look nothing alike. The Medoc is flat, formal and grand, built for a long avenue of vines and a hundred and fifty guests; Saint-Emilion is hilly, medieval and small in scale, better suited to sixty people, a limestone cellar and a short walk between everything. Arcachon and Cap Ferret add an hour of driving and an oyster lunch to the Sunday.

It suits couples who want a working estate rather than a hotel, and who are comfortable with dry hire and a caterer. What surprises couples is the harvest: many estates will not host a wedding during the vendange, so an early autumn date has to be agreed with the property before you print anything.

The three that catch people out

Know before you book

  1. 1

Harvest runs roughly from late August into October depending on the year and the grape, and some working estates close to events entirely during it. Ask about the vendange before you settle on an autumn date.

  2. 2

Dry hire is the norm: the fee buys the chateau and the grounds, while caterer, furniture, staff, lighting and sometimes power are yours to arrange. Compare venues on the all-in total.

  3. 3

The climate here is Atlantic rather than Mediterranean, milder and wetter than the south. Book covered space you would actually be happy to use, instead of treating it as an emergency plan.

Getting there

Bordeaux-Merignac takes direct flights from most of western Europe, sits about twenty minutes west of the city and has a tram line into the centre. The TGV from Paris reaches Bordeaux Saint-Jean in a little over two hours, which makes rail the sensible route for European guests routing through Paris. From the station, Saint-Emilion is roughly forty minutes by car or train, the Medoc an hour or more, and Arcachon under an hour by rail. Publish both the airport and the station, and say plainly whether guests need a car at the venue, because rural estates are not walkable to anything.

Before you promise anyone anything

Couples are regularly caught out by France's residence and publication requirements for a civil marriage, which are widely described as strict and are applied commune by commune rather than nationally. This app does not tell you what those requirements currently are and nothing here is legal advice. Most foreign couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony at the estate; if you want the legal marriage itself to happen in France, treat the rules as yours to verify in writing with the mairie of the commune and with your own authorities before you plan around them.

Marriage rules vary by country, region and even municipality, and they change. Treat this as orientation, not legal advice: verify the paperwork with the local authority and with your own municipality before you book anything.

19 wedding venues in Bordeaux

Gathered offline through research from each venue’s own website, never a live feed, and never paid for. Venue details are shown as the venue publishes them.
