Trouwen in Sicilië

Sicilië beloont stellen die zich vastleggen op één hoek ervan. Palermo geeft jullie vervallen grandeur, markten en een stad die zichzelf nooit helemaal opruimt. Taormina geeft het terras boven zee met de Etna in beeld, tegen de hoogste prijzen van het eiland.

Noto, Modica en Ragusa geven honingkleurige barokke stadjes op ongeveer een uur van Catania, en Siracusa geeft Ortigia. Daartussen liggen wijndomeinen op de zwarte vulkanische grond van de Etna en bagli, ommuurde boerderijlandgoederen in het westen, die in hun geheel per weekend verhuurd worden. De kosten liggen doorgaans onder die van de klassiekers op het vasteland bij vergelijkbare schoonheid, en het eten alleen al rechtvaardigt de reis.

Het eerlijke deel is de aardrijkskunde: het eiland is groot, van Palermo naar Taormina is ongeveer drie uur snelweg, en een gastenlijst die over beide uiteinden verdeeld is, brengt haar vakantie in een busje door. Het andere eerlijke deel is augustus, wanneer het regelmatig boven de vijfendertig graden komt, de sirocco het dagenlang nog hoger kan houden, en de kust rond Ferragosto op zijn drukst en duurst is.

    Jullie keuze van luchthaven legt jullie helft van het eiland vast: Catania voor Taormina, de Etna, Siracusa en de Val di Noto, Palermo voor het westen. Van de ene naar de andere kant is ongeveer drie uur, dus houd locatie, hotels en luchthaven in één streek.

    Zomerhitte is een ontwerpprobleem in plaats van een detail. Zet de ceremonie tussen juni en september om zes uur 's avonds of later, zorg voor schaduw en water, en spreek af wat er gebeurt als de sirocco opsteekt, wat met een dag waarschuwing kan gebeuren.

    Landelijke domeinen komen vaak met weinig materiaal en een eigen cateraar die je niet kunt vervangen. Vraag om een schriftelijke inventaris, om de afspraken rond stroom en aggregaten, en of een bus tot aan het hek kan komen voordat je offertes vergelijkt.

Ernaartoe komen

Catania Fontanarossa is de toegangspoort tot het oosten: Taormina ligt op ongeveer een uur snelweg, Siracusa op ruwweg een uur en de Val di Noto op zo'n anderhalf uur. Palermo Falcone Borsellino bedient het westen en Cefalù, en Comiso is een kleine derde optie voor Ragusa en Modica met een dunne dienstregeling. Directe Europese vluchten zijn seizoensgebonden en vallen buiten de zomer sterk weg, dus controleer de vluchten voor jullie werkelijke maand voordat je de datum vastlegt. Bijna elke gast heeft een huurauto of een geboekte transfer nodig, want de wegen op het platteland zijn traag en bussen kunnen een boerderijlandgoed niet altijd bereiken. Vertel gasten welke luchthaven ze moeten boeken, niet alleen welk eiland.

Voordat je iemand iets belooft

De meeste buitenlandse stellen die in Italië trouwen, ronden het juridische huwelijk in eigen land af en houden hier een symbolische of kerkelijke ceremonie, al is een burgerlijk huwelijk ter plaatse in sommige gevallen mogelijk. Een burgerlijke ceremonie ergens anders dan op het gemeentehuis hangt ervan af of de gemeente die plek als trouwlocatie heeft aangewezen, en het papierwerk, de vertalingen, de legalisatie, de kosten en een eventuele meldings- of wachttermijn verschillen per nationaliteit, per gemeente en door de tijd heen. Dit is geen juridisch advies: controleer de actuele eisen bij de gemeente waar jullie willen trouwen en bij jullie eigen instanties voordat jullie je vastleggen op een datum, een locatie of een aanbetaling.
