Getting married in Dutch Castles

The Netherlands has more castles and country estates than its flat reputation suggests, and most of them sit within ninety minutes of Amsterdam: moated brick castles along the Vecht and the Kromme Rijn in Utrecht, hunting estates and country houses in Gelderland and on the Veluwe, farmsteads and small chateaux in Brabant, and the hillier, half-Belgian landscape of Limburg. It suits couples who want the picture of a castle without asking anyone to fly, with guests who drive out in the afternoon and are home the same night, or stay in the coach house and make a weekend of it. Formats vary more than the photographs suggest: some estates are professional wedding venues with a fixed package and an in-house kitchen, others are foundations or private houses that let a hall a handful of times a year.

Establish which you are dealing with early, because it decides whether you are booking a service or building a wedding from parts. What surprises couples is how firmly the grounds are protected, with monument status, old trees, gravel and lawns limiting where anything may be driven, pitched, hung or lit.

The three that catch people out

Know before you book

  1. 1

Listed estates restrict what may be fixed, hung, driven over or lit, indoors and on the grounds. Ask for the house rules in writing before you commission any decor.

  2. 2

Some castles are venues with a package, others let a hall a few times a year with nothing included. Establish which one you are quoting before you compare prices.

  3. 3

The grounds look their best from late May, but a Dutch summer still rains. Confirm the indoor fallback seats your full guest count, not just its standing capacity.

Getting there

Almost everyone drives. The castle belt runs from Utrecht through Gelderland into Brabant and Limburg, an hour to ninety minutes from Amsterdam, Rotterdam and the German border. Schiphol and Eindhoven cover guests flying in, and mainline stations at Utrecht, Arnhem, Den Bosch and Maastricht leave only a taxi ride to most estates. Parking on grass or gravel is finite and can close in wet weather, so agree an overnight car rule and a taxi plan before the invitations go out.

Before you promise anyone anything

Couples often complete the legal marriage at their own town hall and hold a free-form or symbolic ceremony at the estate. In the Netherlands a ceremony only becomes legally binding at a location the municipality has designated for marriages, or through a huwelijk op locatie arrangement agreed with the gemeente for that date and building. Whether a listed castle qualifies, what it costs and how long it takes to arrange vary by municipality and change over time. Nothing here is legal advice: ask the gemeente the venue falls under, and your own authorities, before you plan around it.

Marriage rules vary by country, region and even municipality, and they change. Treat this as orientation, not legal advice: verify the paperwork with the local authority and with your own municipality before you book anything.

54 wedding venues in Dutch Castles

Gathered offline through research from each venue’s own website, never a live feed, and never paid for. A venue is listed because it exists and takes weddings, not because Vow endorses it; the one line under each is what a planner would tell you to check before asking for a quote. Venue details are shown as the venue publishes them.
