Getting married in Amsterdam
Amsterdam is the destination wedding for a guest list spread across Europe and short on holiday days: everyone lands at one airport, checks into one neighbourhood and walks or takes a tram to everything after that. The city offers three distinct looks. A seventeenth-century canal house with a garden behind it gives you the intimate, formal version.
A stripped industrial hall in the west or out in the harbour gives you space, height and a late licence. A museum or monument room gives you a dinner nobody forgets. Towards Amstelveen and Haarlemmermeer the edge of the city adds green estates and country houses within half an hour of the centre.
It suits parties of forty to a hundred and twenty. The constraints are floor area, staircases and noise: canal houses are tall and narrow, lifts are rare, and neighbours live directly above and beside the party. What surprises couples is the gap between a Saturday in June and a Friday in the same week, and how many venues quote the room alone, with catering, staff and hire on separate lines.
- Best months

- Price band
- Premium · Exclusive-use properties and high-season weekends carry a premium. Plan the venue line first, then build the rest around what is left.

The three that catch people out
Know before you book
1
Canal houses are tall, narrow and rarely have a lift. Check the seated capacity per floor and how guests with limited mobility reach the ceremony room.
2
City venues sit in residential streets and end amplified music early. Get the curfew, any sound limit and the load-out time written into the contract.
3
Rooms and Saturdays peak from May to September and around big city events. A Thursday or Friday date usually buys a better room for the same budget.
Getting there
Schiphol is fifteen minutes by train from Amsterdam Centraal and one of the best-connected airports in Europe, and international trains from London, Brussels, Paris and Germany arrive in the centre. Once guests are here nobody needs a car: trams, the metro, boats and their own legs cover the city, and hotel parking is expensive enough to be worth avoiding. Book rooms in one or two neighbourhoods and publish walking and tram times between the hotel, the ceremony and the dinner.
Before you promise anyone anything
Many couples complete the legal marriage at their own town hall and hold a free-form ceremony at the venue. In the Netherlands a ceremony is only legally binding at a location the municipality has designated for marriages, or under a huwelijk op locatie arrangement agreed with the gemeente for your date and building. Conditions, lead times, fees and which buildings qualify vary by municipality and change over time. Nothing here is legal advice: ask the gemeente where you intend to marry, and your own authorities, and get the answer in writing before you plan around it.
Marriage rules vary by country, region and even municipality, and they change. Treat this as orientation, not legal advice: verify the paperwork with the local authority and with your own municipality before you book anything.
Researched venues
48 wedding venues in Amsterdam
Gathered offline through research from each venue’s own website, never a live feed, and never paid for. A venue is listed because it exists and takes weddings, not because Vow endorses it; the one line under each is what a planner would tell you to check before asking for a quote. Venue details are shown as the venue publishes them.

- not published
- Price
- not published — ask for the brochure
A domed 17th-century church on the Singel, run as an event venue by the adjoining Renaissance Amsterdam Hotel, so ceremony, dinner and guest rooms sit on one site. - Price
- not published — ask for the brochure
A grand riverside hotel on the Amstel at the Muntplein with terraces over the water, suited to a formal city wedding where guests stay on site. - Capacity

- Price
- not published — ask for the brochure
The last surviving country house of the Watergraafsmeer, with formal gardens and a coach house, giving a garden ceremony inside the city ring.
