Getting married in Sicily
Sicily rewards couples who commit to one corner of it. Palermo gives you faded grandeur, markets and a city that never quite tidies itself. Taormina gives you the terrace above the sea with Etna in the frame, at the highest prices on the island.
Noto, Modica and Ragusa give you honey-coloured baroque towns an hour or so from Catania, and Siracusa gives you Ortigia. Between them sit wine estates on Etna's black volcanic soil and bagli, walled farm estates in the west, that rent whole for a weekend. Costs generally run below the mainland classics for comparable beauty, and the food alone justifies the trip.
The honest part is geography: the island is large, Palermo to Taormina is around three hours of motorway, and a guest list split between both ends will spend its holiday in a minibus. The other honest part is August, when temperatures routinely pass thirty-five degrees, the scirocco can hold them higher for days, and the coast is at its most crowded and most expensive around Ferragosto.

The three that catch people out
Know before you book
1
Your airport choice fixes your half of the island: Catania for Taormina, Etna, Siracusa and the Val di Noto, Palermo for the west. Crossing between them is about three hours, so keep venue, hotels and airport in one region.
2
Summer heat is a design problem rather than a detail. Between June and September put the ceremony at or after six in the evening, plan shade and water, and agree what happens if the scirocco arrives, which it can do with a day's notice.
3
Rural estates often come with little equipment and an in-house caterer you cannot replace. Ask for a written inventory, the power and generator arrangements, and whether a coach can reach the gate before you compare quotes.
Getting there
Catania Fontanarossa is the gateway to the east: Taormina is about an hour by motorway, Siracusa roughly an hour, and the Val di Noto around ninety minutes. Palermo Falcone Borsellino serves the west and Cefalu, and Comiso is a small third option for Ragusa and Modica with a thin flight schedule. Direct European routes are seasonal and drop away sharply outside summer, so check the flights for your actual month before fixing the date. Almost every guest will need a hire car or a booked transfer, because rural roads are slow and coaches cannot always reach a farm estate. Tell guests which airport to book, not just which island.
Before you promise anyone anything
Most foreign couples marrying in Italy complete the legal marriage in their home country and hold a symbolic or religious ceremony here, although a local civil marriage is available in some cases. A civil ceremony anywhere other than the town hall depends on the comune having designated that place for marriages, and the paperwork, translations, legalisation, fees and any notice or waiting period differ by nationality, by comune and over time. This is not legal advice: check the current requirements with the comune where you plan to marry and with your own authorities before you commit to a date, a venue or a deposit.
Marriage rules vary by country, region and even municipality, and they change. Treat this as orientation, not legal advice: verify the paperwork with the local authority and with your own municipality before you book anything.

25 wedding venues in Sicily
Gathered offline through research from each venue’s own website, never a live feed, and never paid for. A venue is listed because it exists and takes weddings, not because Vow endorses it; the one line under each is what a planner would tell you to check before asking for a quote. Venue details are shown as the venue publishes them.
