Getting married in Belgian Ardennes

The Ardennes are the quiet, close-to-home answer for couples from the Low Countries and northern France: forests, river valleys, small castles and farmhouses that sleep the whole party, two or three hours from home by car. It suits couples who want the feeling of going away without asking guests to fly, and who would rather spend on food and a good band than on flights. Venues are often rented for a full weekend with bedrooms, which turns the wedding into a house party: Friday arrival and barbecue, Saturday ceremony and dinner, Sunday brunch before the drive home.

Prices are modest by destination standards, and suppliers are used to bilingual events. The trade-off is the weather, which is green for a reason and can rain in any month, and phone signal that fades in the valleys. What surprises couples is how much they end up hiring in, because a lovely old farmhouse rarely comes with three hundred glasses and a working kitchen.

The three that catch people out

Know before you book

  1. 1

Rain is likely in any month, so a covered ceremony option is not optional. Confirm the wet-weather space holds your full guest count seated.

  2. 2

Old farmhouses and small chateaux rarely come equipped. Get a written inventory of tables, chairs, glassware, kitchen and toilets before you compare quotes.

  3. 3

Mobile coverage can be poor in the valleys. Print the run sheet and contacts card, and give suppliers the venue landline where one exists.

Getting there

Almost everyone drives: the region is two to three hours from Brussels, Amsterdam, Cologne and Lille, and one hour from Liege or Luxembourg. Brussels and Charleroi airports serve guests flying in, and rail reaches the larger towns before a taxi or a lift covers the last stretch. Because guests arrive by car and stay over, parking capacity and a rule for cars left overnight are more important here than shuttle planning.

Before you promise anyone anything

Couples typically complete the legal marriage in their home municipality and hold a symbolic or religious ceremony at the venue. Where a local civil marriage is possible, the conditions, documents and any residence or notice periods vary by nationality, by commune and over time. Nothing here is legal advice: confirm the current rules with the relevant town hall and your own authorities before planning around them.

Marriage rules vary by country, region and even municipality, and they change. Treat this as orientation, not legal advice: verify the paperwork with the local authority and with your own municipality before you book anything.

33 wedding venues in Belgian Ardennes

Gathered offline through research from each venue’s own website, never a live feed, and never paid for. A venue is listed because it exists and takes weddings, not because Vow endorses it; the one line under each is what a planner would tell you to check before asking for a quote. Venue details are shown as the venue publishes them.
