Trouwen in Bordeaux

Bordeaux is de wijnbruiloft zonder het Provençaalse prijskaartje. De stad is achttiende-eeuws, vlak en te belopen, met kades langs de Garonne en genoeg hotels om een grote gastenlijst binnen één tramrit van elkaar onder te brengen. De bruiloft zelf vindt meestal ergens anders plaats, op een van de vele châteaux viticoles verspreid over de Médoc, de Entre-deux-Mers en het land rond Saint-Émilion.

De twee uiteinden van de streek lijken in niets op elkaar. De Médoc is vlak, formeel en groots, gebouwd voor een lange laan van wijnstokken en honderdvijftig gasten; Saint-Émilion is heuvelachtig, middeleeuws en klein van schaal, beter geschikt voor zestig mensen, een kalkstenen kelder en een korte wandeling tussen alles. Arcachon en Cap Ferret voegen een uur rijden en een oesterlunch aan de zondag toe.

Het past bij stellen die een werkend landgoed willen in plaats van een hotel, en die zich thuis voelen bij kale huur en een cateraar. Wat stellen verrast, is de oogst: veel domeinen ontvangen geen bruiloften tijdens de vendange, dus een datum in het vroege najaar moeten jullie met het pand afspreken voordat je iets laat drukken.

    De oogst loopt grofweg van eind augustus tot in oktober, afhankelijk van het jaar en de druif, en sommige werkende domeinen sluiten in die periode volledig voor evenementen. Vraag naar de vendange voordat jullie je op een najaarsdatum vastleggen.

    Kale huur is de norm: de prijs koopt het château en het terrein, terwijl cateraar, meubilair, personeel, licht en soms stroom aan jullie zijn. Vergelijk locaties op het alles-in-totaal.

    Het klimaat is hier Atlantisch en niet mediterraan: milder en natter dan in het zuiden. Boek overdekte ruimte die jullie ook echt met plezier zouden gebruiken, in plaats van die als noodplan te behandelen.

Ernaartoe komen

Bordeaux-Mérignac heeft directe vluchten uit vrijwel heel West-Europa, ligt ongeveer twintig minuten ten westen van de stad en heeft een tramlijn naar het centrum. De TGV vanuit Parijs bereikt Bordeaux Saint-Jean in iets meer dan twee uur, waardoor de trein de verstandige route is voor Europese gasten die via Parijs reizen. Vanaf het station is Saint-Émilion ongeveer veertig minuten met de auto of de trein, de Médoc een uur of meer, en Arcachon minder dan een uur per spoor. Publiceer zowel de luchthaven als het station, en zeg duidelijk of gasten bij de locatie een auto nodig hebben, want vanaf landelijke domeinen kun je nergens naartoe lopen.

Voordat je iemand iets belooft

Stellen worden regelmatig verrast door de Franse woon- en afkondigingseisen voor een burgerlijk huwelijk, die algemeen als streng worden omschreven en per gemeente worden toegepast in plaats van landelijk. De meeste buitenlandse stellen trouwen juridisch thuis en houden een symbolische ceremonie op het domein; als jullie het juridische huwelijk zelf in Frankrijk willen laten plaatsvinden, ga er dan van uit dat jullie de regels schriftelijk moeten laten bevestigen door het gemeentehuis van de betreffende gemeente en door jullie eigen instanties voordat je erop plant.
